The Rila Monastery

The Rila Monastery is situated in the Rila Mountains 1,147m above sea level. The Monastery was founded by the hermit John of Rila and built by the scholars who came to be taught by him.

The residential buildings were started in 1816 and the monastery's main church dates back to 1844.

The museum is well worth a visit (small local charge) and is home to The Raphael's cross which was carved by the monk Raphael and took 12 years to complete.

In 1983 the monastery took it's place in UNESCO'S list of world heritage.

Our trip starts at 9am from your hotel/apartment and returns approx 4pm,there are lots of places for lunch (not included). This is our favourite trip and is highly recomended!
